Tiptop Audio / Buchla 292t Quad Lopass Gate

The Buchla 292t Quad Lopass Gate is a 4-channel Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) and audio mixer module.

The module is equipped with four VCF/VCA units called low pass gates, which have audio outputs for each channel and an output that mixes these outputs. This low pass gate module uses a special electronic component called a bactrol (photocoupler), and this distinctive sound determines the sound produced by Buchla synths.

■MODE switch
Three types of modes can be set for each channel.

・Gate・・・Works as a simple linear VCA with no timbre change. (Lower LED is lit)
・Combo・・・A tone between Gate and Lopass mode. Adds a natural decay feeling and harmonic change like an acoustic instrument to the CV input. (LED is off)
Lopass・・・Has the characteristics of a low pass filter. When a short gate or decay envelope CV is input, it creates a percussive "snap" sound. (Top LED lights up)

■Blue knob
These are the volume knobs for each channel, that is, the VCA offset knobs. The input CV is added to the value set by the knob.

These are the CV inputs for each channel. The higher the input voltage, the larger the output signal.

OUTPUTS A | B | C | D
These are the audio outputs for each low pass gate unit.

They can also be used as quad VCAs to create a quadraphonic system.

They function as a 1-4ch audio mixer.

■Tips
In Combo and Lopass modes, the input CV or the offset value set by the knob changes the volume and the brightness/darkness of the tone at the same time. This characteristic is the same as the tonal characteristics of all acoustic instruments.

By controlling the envelope voltage input to the 292t with the 257t, you can obtain a wider variety of tones and responses.
