■Compressor & gate/expander, API500 compatible
The studio large format recording console ""SL 4000 B"" released by Solid State Logic in 1976 during its founding period is a legendary console that can be said to be ""the console that started it all"" for SSL, with only six units produced as a prototype of the SSL4000E console that was later introduced in recording studios around the world.
It is famous for being installed in the ""Stone Room"" of London's Townhouse Studio in the late 70's and early 80's. This console was used to record many famous songs, including Phil Collins' ""In the Air Tonight,"" The Buggles' ""Video Killed the Radio Star,"" and Peter Gabriel's ""Intruder."" Its unique sound quality plays a part in the iconic sound of the hit songs of the time.
The B-Series Dynamics Module is a 500 series modular channel compressor with a more aggressive character, based on the original circuit design of the SSL 4000 B console channel strip.
The B-Series Dynamics Module consists of a compressor/limiter and an expander/gate.
・Legendary SSL 4000 B series channel strip circuit design
- Compressor ratio is 2:1 / 4:1 / 10:1 / ""ds"".
・Automatic makeup gain with RATIO control
・""DS"" setting is effective for wide bands with fast attack and release times triggered by sibilance.
・“OUT” setting allows gate/expander to be bypassed
・LINK side chain that prevents image shift of stereo signals
The B-Series Dynamics Module features a compressor/limiter with three fixed step compression ratios 2:1, 4:1, 10:1 and an additional ""ds"" mode. The ""ds"" setting is a fixed 10:1 with sidechain filter added. Due to the difference in topology, the B-Series Dynamics module is a more unique and colorful dynamics processor than the E-Series.
The gate/expander functions as a 20:1 gate and as a 2:1 expander when the EXP button is pressed. The OUT setting also allows you to bypass the gate/expander and use it as an independent compressor.
The circuitry of the B-Series Dynamics Module is based on the legendary original circuit design of the SSL 4000-B Series Channel Strip, which created that iconic '80s sound.
