The S-1 was created based on the SH-101 synthesizer of yesteryear. In addition to the classic rich bass sound and expressive leads, the new four-note sound source, new oscillator draw and chop functions, sequencer, and intuitive workflow make it easy for everyone from beginners to core synth fans to enjoy the appeal of synthesizers.

The S-1 offers 18 knobs for sound creation and 26 multifunctional pads for advanced sound design and performance. Create tones with oscillator, envelope, filter, and LFO sections. It's easy to go deeper into the sound design tools and create more details.
Effects can be adjusted with dedicated knobs. Multifunctional pads provide access to over 2 octaves of keyboard play, a step sequencer interface, and a wealth of features to bring your most innovative ideas to life.

■Wild sound design.
The S-1 takes the SH sound of yesteryear to a new dimension. The oscillator mode can be selected from mono, poly, unison, and chord modes. The possibilities are endless, including the powerful OSC DRAW function, which allows you to customize waveforms with a step pad, and the OSC CHOP function, which allows you to split waveforms into sections to create powerful metallic sounds. The noise oscillator can also be used as a riser, and sweep and pulse sound effects can be added for more dramatic effects.

■Stimulating Sequencer
The S-1 features a 64-step sequencer and 64 patterns for quickly creating engaging compositions. Live recording on the keyboard is possible, of course, but you can also switch to step mode for detailed programming and editing. Use motion recording to animate fine-tuning of panel controls and set parameter values for each step. You can also use random probability settings, sub-steps, velocity, shuffle, portamento, and a variety of other functions to create lively music.

■Performance playground.
The S-1 is loaded with features for dynamic performance, including D-Motion, which adds movement to tones by moving the S-1 itself; an arpeggiator, which adds a sense of movement without interrupting the flow of the music; and a step-loop function, which adds a live feel to the music without interrupting it. The step-looping function provides a thrilling performance with a live, improvisational feel. You can also easily transpose patterns and introduce them into a song in a different key.

■Effects that never fade away
A wide variety of classic Roland effects are included, including the iconic and rich depth of the chorus derived from the JUNO and JX-3P. Delay delivers a vast range of movement with manual and tempo-sync settings. A studio-grade reverb and a host of finely tunable parameters add to the sonic polish.

The S-1 can work with other devices in a variety of ways: link it with other AIRA Compacts such as the T-8 Beat Machine, J-6 Chord Synthesizer, and E-4 Voice Tweaker to create a portable, creative system, It can also work with computer DAWS and mobile music apps via USB-C. It can also be used as a sound module with MIDI I/O.
