ART/Precision Phono Pre U is a phono equalizer amplifier compatible with MC/MM type cartridges.
■Phono equalizer amplifier compatible with MC and MM cartridges
■Product Overview
This unit allows you to connect a record player that does not have a phono equalizer to a recording system. It is compatible with both MC (moving coil) and MM (moving magnet) cartridges.
■Compatible with MC and MM cartridges
The input can be switched between MC and MM, and the gain and cartridge load can be changed to match the cartridge. In addition, the load resistance of MC cartridges can be set to 100Ω or 25Ω. Furthermore, the GAIN TRIM control allows you to optimize the output for each cartridge.
■Removes excess noise
The amplifier circuit uses a low-noise circuit, so there is no noise or distortion caused by the step-up transformer. In addition, the low-cut filter can remove unnecessary subsonic components from the record player without compromising sound quality.
■Features
High-performance, low-noise phono equalizer amplifier.
You can connect a record player to various audio systems.
Compatible with both MC and MM cartridges.
Low-cut filter removes subsonic components.
Adjustable preamp gain
Equipped with clip indicator.
External power supply for low noise.
■Why a phono equalizer amplifier is needed when playing analog records
1. Since low and mid-high frequencies cannot be reproduced equally, the low frequencies must be compensated for during playback.
2. Since records have a certain amount of hiss, post-production work is done before pressing to boost the gain of high frequencies. Therefore, the opposite equalization is required during playback.
3. The output signal of a phono cartridge is weak (about 5mV even for MM cartridges), so it must be amplified during playback while taking into account items 1 and 2 above. In the mid-1950s, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) established compensation standards. As a result, from this time on, RIAA phono equalizers were built into all Hi-Fi stereo amplifiers and phono inputs were added. If you connect a record player to a mixer that does not have a phono equalizer, you will need a separate phono equalizer amplifier.
4. MC cartridges are generally low impedance and low output (approximately 0.2mV). In most cases, they work best with a load resistance of 24-100Ω, and this resistance value determines the sound of the cartridge.
5. There are also ""high output"" MC cartridges with a load resistance of 47kΩ and an output of about 2mV. In this unit, set INPUT TYPE to Moving Magnet to accommodate this, and perform 6-8dB gain compensation with GAIN TRIM.
