Saturate's two controls are an advanced signal processing engine that allows you to overdrive your signal without affecting the tonal balance, no matter how hard you push it. You can add up to 24dB of overdrive without it sounding muddy or muffled.

In addition, the SHAPE control allows you to smoothly morph between hard clipping and the mathematically smoothest curve. Use Saturate to overdrive individual tracks or entire mixes.

■The Science of Saturation
Any audio signal can be broken down into a number of sine waves of different frequencies. When you overdrive that signal, the high-amplitude low frequencies can overwhelm the mid- and high-frequency frequencies where your ears are more sensitive. Because of this, an overdriven signal can lose fine details and sound oversaturated or indistinct. This is because the Saturator removes low amplitude sine waves at mid and high frequencies when the low frequencies are at the top and bottom of their swing. This causes a shift in the tonal balance that depends on the frequency content of the signal.

Saturate uses a special Spectral Clipper technique to add this fine detail back into the saturated signal. The signal is saturated based on a curve, but sine waves of different frequencies are processed independently. This means that loud low frequencies do not overwhelm fine frequencies, and the tonal balance at the output is the same as the input, with only harmonics added.

Saturate also employs a highly efficient anti-aliasing method that removes aliasing artifacts, and very high oversampling at a fraction of the CPU resources.
