Punctuate's intelligent algorithm allows you to control the transient emphasis/suppression of all 26 critical bands with just four controls. This makes it a very powerful, yet very easy to use transient modulator.

Transient shapers are used by top mix engineers to make instrument transients louder or quieter to emphasize attack and sustain. However, traditional transient shapers process the entire signal at once, so if the transient snap only occurs in one band, it will modulate the entire frequency band. Punctuate uses a model of the human ear to run a set of transient shapers across the full range of human hearing. This allows you to adjust the attack of instruments, buses, and entire mixes without messing with the entire frequency range. The result is unparalleled transient shaping power concentrated where you need it, and not where you don't.

■The Science of Punctuate
Humans can only detect the presence of a sound if it is a certain distance away from other sounds that are playing at the same time. The Mel scale is a division of audible frequency bands such that each band is heard equally spaced from the others. This division of sounds describes human hearing.

Many graphic EQs are IIR (infinite impulse response), or analog-style filters. These have many great properties, but unfortunately IIR filter shapes are not very flexible. For example, even if you set all bands to flat, the overall filter shape is not actually flat. Moreover, boosting or cutting each band also affects its neighbors. Punctuate uses linear-phase FIR (finite impulse response) filters that don't have these problems, so you get a sound that sounds just like what you see on the screen.

Instead of what DSP engineers call an ""ideal"" rectangular FIR filter, we use a triangular filter, a model of hearing that is often used as a first approximation of the critical bands of the inner ear. With filters shaped like those found in our ears, the filtered signal will sound natural. With a complex signal, only one sound source will be heard by each filter at any given time.

Using these filters, Punctuate splits the incoming audio signal into 26 critical bands, and runs a transient shaper on each band, giving you unprecedented control over the transients of your audio signal. This allows Punctuate to add punch only where the signal needs it, rather than raising or lowering the level of the entire signal at the transient points. The independent control of the bands means you can even emphasize transients in some bands and suppress them in others. And because it's based on critical bands, it does this in a way that sounds natural to the human ear, so you won't hear any artifacts.

Finally, Punctuate allows you to smooth out the transient modulation between bands with the ADAPTIVE TRANSIENT control, which allows you to keep each band independent for ultimate control, or combine them for an even smoother sound.
