The original Minimoog Model D, released in 1970, was the first portable synthesizer and the prototype for all subsequent electronic keyboards. This all-analog instrument was highly praised for its epic sound of the 1960s Moog modular synthesizers and the ease of use of pre-wired modules - no patch cables required, just the way you want to play. Since its release, artists as diverse as Herbie Hancock, Kraftwerk, Rick Wakeman, Sun Ra, Piero Umiliani, Giorgio Moroder, Bernie Worrell, and Gary Numan have used it to create their own unique sounds and new musical genres.

More than half a century after its ""invention,"" the Minimoog Model D is once again being produced at the Moog factory in Asheville, North Carolina. A one-of-a-kind instrument, and one of the most beloved and iconic synthesizers ever developed, this instrument will be in the hands of synthesists of all musical styles and a source of inspiration for the next generation of electronic musicians.

The three-oscillator, monophonic analog synthesizer is housed in a locally sourced Appalachian cherry cabinet and a hand-finished aluminum chassis, and its sound is as lively and deep as the original. The various circuits, such as the low-pass ladder filter, powerful oscillators, and mixer that produces rich saturation, are designed using the same circuitry and through-hole (not surface-mounted) board design as the Minimoog Model D from the 1970s.

While the original sound engine (audio path) remains unchanged, the 2022 Minimoog Model D has many functional improvements that expand the range of sound creation for this legendary instrument. These include a dedicated LFO with an analog circuit that has built-in square and triangle waves, a high-quality Fatar keyboard that supports velocity and after-pressure (aftertouch), a CV terminal (with trim pot) at the top edge of the panel, MIDI compatibility, and feedback from the mixer circuit that allows you to get overdrive just by turning the knobs, making it easy to create extreme sounds. Also, for the first time on a Minimoog Model D, a spring-loaded pitch wheel (which automatically returns to the center position when you let go!) is used, greatly improving playability and contributing to wild performances.
