Formed in 1987 in the student town of Umea in northern Sweden, MESHUGGAH has spent over 20 years evolving, exploring, and defining the complex and unique musical medium that resides within their minds, releasing 13 albums. For over 17 years, MESHUGGAH has remained a singular force, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of extreme music simply because it feels natural to them. They are one of the few musical groups with pure, honest lateral thinking to date. Unafraid to take risks and experiment, they have produced albums that will still resonate with listeners a decade from now. The legend surrounding them revolves around odd time signatures that deviate from the typical 4/4. It is not uncommon, therefore, to see some of the biggest names in metal watching from the wings of a MESHUGGAH show, shaking their heads at the band's downtuned, groove-filled yet precisely executed polyrhythms that never lose their grip. Their following is legion, including Tool, The These musicians include Deftones, Kirk Hammett & Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), and John Petrucci (Dream Theater). Both Berklee College of Music in Boston and Musicians Institute in Hollywood use MESHUGGAH's music as part of their teaching materials, citing its importance as a contemporary music education tool. It's hard to believe given the band's humble yet confident beginnings, but today MESHUGGAH has been named one of Rolling Stone magazine's ""10 Most Important Hard and Heavy Bands"" and is building a legacy in music comparable to Stephen Hawking's in theoretical physics.
