Full Analog Tape Simulator & Optocoupler
■ Controls true analog harmonics and recreates the sounds of various vintage compressors.
FATSO is an optimizer and compressor that digitally controls real analog circuits with complex routing, adding the warmth of various analog devices to your sound. The sound derived from genuine analog circuits, unlike plug-ins, adds a musical resonance and texture.
FATSO combines complex processing to recreate the tones of every conceivable analog device, including transformer circuits, vacuum tubes, tape compressors, tape saturation, and analog records. It can even recreate the smooth tones of vintage equipment from brands like NEVE, API, UREI, and Fairchild.
It also features a DISTRESSOR-type program knee compressor circuit.
■ Upgraded EL7x
- New compressor preset position ""Eleven""
- New two-color front panel design
- New, cooled-operated logic circuit
- Separate tracking LEDs
- Further noise floor improvement
The previous FATSO Jr. compressor preset was called ""GP,"" but this position has been renamed the ""Eleven"" preset.
The ""Eleven"" position perfectly emulates the UREI 1176LN's 20:1 ratio, slow attack time, and fast release time. This classic setting has been heard on countless hit records. It delivers strong, analog-like limiting while preserving dynamics, creating tracks that stand out in the mix. It delivers excellent results on vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, drum room mics, piano, and more.
The UREI 1176's unique character was achieved by leading modern equipment designer Dave Derr, who spent months tweaking and listening to every detail. Finally, using a state-of-the-art digital oscilloscope and Derr's expert ear, he recreated the ultimate sound of the UREI 1176 compressor.
Of course, the FATSO's built-in compressor presets aren't limited to ""Eleven."" By combining presets, you can recreate the sounds of any compressor, even the settings of legendary machines.
■Four Creative Processing
・Freely add a variety of analog sound textures
The Harmonics Generator allows you to add second- and third-order harmonic components (distortion)—elements of the sound produced by transformers and vacuum tubes—to the source, ranging from 0.06% to 20% depending on the setting. Adding a small amount of these components can produce a wonderfully musical sound, or adding too much can create extreme, freakout distortion. The 0VU (1%) and Pinned (5%) LEDs visually indicate the amount of added harmonics. You can instantly determine the amount of warmth you're adding to your sound.
Controllable Analog Tape Saturation
The FATSO lets you freely adjust the tape saturation texture typified by analog tape with the Warmth control knob. This adds the distinctive texture of authentic analog tape to your sound without the annoying hiss. This control simulates the unique softness in the high frequencies caused by saturation in analog magnetic tape, a sound commonly referred to as tape compression. The amount of warmth is visually indicated by the Warmth meter on the top of the unit.
Switchable Transformer Circuit
This circuit simulates the edge in the mid-range and rich harmonic content of vintage Neve and other input/output transformers. This unique, deep transformer sound adds a deep, rich texture to your source, making it seem as if it's one level louder and deeper, without changing the peak level.
- Total of 7 Compressor/Limiter Modes
Combine 4 compressor/limiter styles to achieve a wide range of ""soft knee compression"" sounds, similar to the classic Distressor. Easily achieve a thick, tight sound with minimal level fluctuations. Of course, you can also perfectly simulate vintage classics.
4 basic styles are available, with 7 different styles available when combined.
1. BUSS: Soft knee type with a 2:1 ratio. Slow attack and fast release. DBX160 type.
2. G.P.: Medium attack and slow release. Features the natural compression of optocoupler (optical) types such as the LA2A, MEEK, and ADL.
3. Tracking Comp: Selecting both BUSS and G.P. (1+2) will produce the classic Urei 1176 sound. It can be used for a wide range of applications, from overdubbing vocals and instruments to an aggressive, four-button sound.
4. Spank: Simulates the high-ratio feel of a '70s SSL talkback limiter. This SPANK button can be combined with the other three styles to deliver a particularly aggressive limiting sound. The unique release curve, which starts fast and then slows down, has become synonymous with the FATSO compressor sound. This limiter mode smashes the dynamic range. It has a wonderfully radical sound quality and is also ideal for preventing clipping on digital recorders.
From mastering to mixing and tracking, you can use the rich, sweet analog texture of the FATSO. When mixing digitally recorded sounds using a transformerless head amp with minimal coloration, you can transform them into a tube-like sound, use the Tranny control to create a NEVE-like effect, make them sound as if they were recorded on high-quality 2-inch analog tape, or create a truly lo-fi distortion sound. The possibilities are endless. This model gives you convenient, easy, and flexible control over authentic analog sound.
