24-bit/96kHz A/D converter for the highest quality conversion
■AD Converter
The LAVRY Engineering AD122-96MX is a new model of the AD122-96MKIII, a pinnacle A/D converter standard in recording and mastering studios around the world. It fully inherits the functionality and sound of the AD122-96 MKIII, while offering improved clipping resistance for larger input signals.
It converts analog signals to true 24-bit digital audio, with a dynamic range of 127dB for musically optimal results.
The AD122-96 MX is the fifth generation model in Lavry Engineering's Gold Series.
The original AD122 model was developed by dB Technologies, Lavry Engineering's predecessor, and was the first converter to support a dynamic range of up to 122dB at 20-bit.
The second-generation AD122-96 was able to convert from the standard 44.1-48kHz sampling rate to 88.2kHz and 96kHz.
At 88.2kHz and 96kHz, the dynamic range was lower than at standard rates, but this was improved with the later AD122-96MKII.
The third-generation AD122-96MKII achieved a dynamic range of 127dB, delivering consistent, clean performance across the frequency range. The clock section was further improved to lock to both internal and external clocks with extremely low jitter.
However, the power required to achieve this cutting-edge performance generated a lot of heat, necessitating heat dissipation issues.
The AD122-96MKIII is a redesign of the MKII with a focus on thermal design.
The new converter module is housed in a metal enclosure with a large heat sink and is powered by a newly designed power supply. The clock circuit is the same as the MKII, and the internal program software has not changed since the MKII.
By reducing heat, distortion across all frequency bands has been reduced and flexibility in installation location has been achieved.
The AD122-96MX is the latest version of the standard equipment in professional studios, and while retaining the transparent sound character of the AD122-96MKIII, which is used as the standard AD converter in studios around the world, it incorporates new technology that makes it less likely to clip even with large input signals.
