What is PCM?
PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is a method for digitally storing and playing audio samples. Before virtual instruments became commonplace, Roland's PCM-based keyboards and sound modules were a standard choice for professionals seeking a wide range of high-quality sounds. Models such as the JV-1080, XP-80, and XV-5080 could be further expanded by attaching expansion boards containing genre-specific sample waveforms.

This concept began with the JV-80, which appeared in 1992, and since then, more than 30 types of expansion boards have been released over several generations. The SR-JV80 and SRX series boards have become indispensable for top producers, composers, and performers, and their sound is still loved by many people today.

The JV-1080, packed with a vast array of sounds into a single unit, became an iconic sound of the 90s music scene, supporting R&B, pop, hip-hop, and film scores. With a wide range of sounds from synthesizers to acoustic instruments, it expanded the scope of producers' activities. Many of the acoustic presets aimed to reproduce real instruments, yet they exhibited a unique individuality, becoming established as a sound that symbolized the era. Some even call it the most recorded sound module in history. The legacy of the JV-1080 is revived as a software sound source compatible with modern production environments. While faithfully reproducing the original appearance, operation, and famous presets, it has undergone various evolutions, including enhanced effects, added waveforms, and expanded polyphony.

Introduced in 2000, the XV-5080 has long been highly regarded as Roland's most powerful sound module. Featuring a powerful PCM-based multi-timbral sound engine, sophisticated modulation, and professional-grade DSP effects, the software version of the XV-5080 includes over 900 presets, making it ideal for genre-bending creations, from film scores to retro game sounds. With modern enhancements, it remains a powerful sound engine that remains at the forefront of the industry.

The SRX Software Synthesizer plugin recreates the sounds of Roland's renowned SRX and SR-JV80 series expansion boards for modern music production environments. Its advanced sound engine faithfully models the behavior of the original sample ROM and hardware digital circuitry. Edit sounds with an intuitive interface, and save and reuse them for each project.
