The Model 72 Synthesizer System not only offers Softube's faithful modeling, but also features additional functions such as doubling.
Comprised of four sections: tone generator & mixer, envelope & filter, modulation, and output, it offers not only the standard instrument mode but also an FX mode for use as an effects processor, as well as modules for the Amp Room guitar & bass platform and the Modular modular platform, bringing this legendary monophonic synthesizer to a modern era.

The software components of the Model 72 were measured and recreated in detail from the original 1972 hardware, faithfully modeling all of its idiosyncratic behavior and nonlinear characteristics. For example, the hardware often uses a cable from the high-gain output to the external input to generate a feedback tone, a tone heard in countless compositions. Naturally, the Model 72 instrument plug-in also recreates this feature.

In translating this legendary monophonic synthesizer into software, modern features have also been implemented. The expansion panel allows you to adjust aspects of oscillator behavior and the synth's performance. A doubling function allows for unison, and the spread knob adjusts the stereo field. These additional features offer even more possibilities than the original hardware.

Tone Generator and Mixer
The tone generator is the heart of the Model 72. This section features three oscillators, two of which have the same output waveform and characteristics and are linked to the incoming note information. The third oscillator can be unlinked from the incoming note information and used as a free-running modulation oscillator. The tune knob offers a wide tuning range, and each offers a slightly different waveform. The Mixer section uses five switches to switch on/off the sound sources sent to the Filter and Amplifier sections.

Envelopes and Filters
The signal from the Mixer enters a voltage-controlled, four-pole low-pass filter (feedback). This filter has a resonance control, and its cutoff frequency is adjusted with the Cutoff knob, but can also be dynamically changed in real time with this section's dedicated envelope generator or a separate modulation section. The upper envelope generator, with its Attack, Decay, and Sustain knobs, shapes the harmonic content of the sound. The lower envelope generator adjusts amplitude. Playing a note initiates both envelope generators, which progress through each stage over the time set by the knobs.

Modulation Section
The modulation section features a Master Tune knob for global fine tuning of the Model 72, setting the note's glide rate and modulation mix. The legacy method of using either the output of Oscillator 3 or noise has also been recreated. Additionally, an LFO has been added and can be used as a modulation source. All modulation is sent via the modulation wheel, which acts as an attenuator and determines the amount of modulation sent to the destination. Modulation can be sent to the oscillator pitch, the filter cutoff frequency, or both.

Output Section
The output section features a master volume knob that controls the overall volume, and below it is the A440 button. This button toggles the tuning guide tone on/off, activating a 440 Hz (A4) sine wave oscillator for tuning. Below this are the software-specific doubling function and spread knob. Doubling activates unison, and the spread knob allows you to adjust the stereo field.
