The XLA-3 MkII, a 2U rackmount tube optical limiter that creates a dynamic envelope with non-linear characteristics across the full range, has been reborn as the ""Opticom XLA-500,"" a conversion model conforming to the API 500 standard.

The most noteworthy feature of the Opticom XLA-500 lies in its optical circuitry, which can be considered its heart. It features three response switching functions (FAST / NORMAL / SLOW), each producing a different compression curve character. By combining Cinemag transformers in the input and output stages with a Class A gain stage, the XLA-500 can produce a variety of tones, from clean sounds to rich tones full of harmonics, and even ""dirty"" sounds with added distortion. This powerful optical limiter offers complete control, from gentle, mellow compression to extremely fast and aggressive limiting.

The Opticom XLA-500 is arguably the most versatile and user-friendly optical limiter in the API 500 standard product family. It can gently and smoothly control the dynamic range of vocals, add weight and stability to bass tracks, and even crash drum tracks.

The original model of the Opticom XLA-500 is the ""XLA-3 MkII,"" a 2U rackmount size manufactured by Acme Audio, inspired by the Teletronix LA-2A. Based on the smooth and natural compression character that has been loved throughout its long history, the LA-2A incorporates the RESPONSE function (also carried over to the Opticom XLA-500) which creates different envelopes from three response speeds, and is highly praised as a versatile optical limiter that can be used in any situation thanks to its modern arrangement.
