API Audio had not offered gate modules since 1974, but with the 235L, a noise gate/expander has been added to the product lineup. The 235L is a noise gate/expander capable of reducing noise in any type of program source. It achieves processing that does not lose the subtle nuances of sound. With its flexibility, repeatability, and supreme sound quality, the 235L will be useful in all studios, live stages, and broadcast stations. The 235L is one of the fastest-responding noise gates manufactured today. When engineers are handling program sources in high levels of background noise, the 235L performs background noise attenuation using an expander function in addition to gate function at a preset threshold level. There is absolutely no loss of sound quality of program material due to slow triggering, which is common in other products, or ""pinging"" due to trigger malfunctions. For level input and output, the 235L operates in a wide range from -45dBu to +25dBu. It perfectly matches any audio situation regardless of the program level. Once the threshold level is set, the attack time operates faster than 100μsec and slightly slower than 25msec to prevent trigger malfunctions. The depth control has a range of -80dB, but the scale is expanded in the first half of the rotation, making it effective for fine-tuning between 0 and 9dB. The second half can be drastically adjusted between 10 and 80 dB. The expander ratio is 1:2. This allows you to control the level up to a preset maximum without altering the nuances of vocals, percussion, etc. The best setup is to set the gate function threshold level and then switch to expander mode. For special effects like the once-popular gate reverb, set the release function to hold and the release control to hold time. The hold time is 100 msec. By using other 200L series modules, you can configure a perfect channel split from input to dynamics, equalization, and final output. The 235L uses the original API 2510 and API 2520 operational amplifiers, providing the same exceptional reliability, long life, and stable operation as other API products.
