How to Hold the Bow

When playing the violin, holding the bow correctly allows you to produce a beautiful tone and play the instrument without getting tired. Learn the correct way to hold a violin bow for more efficient practicing!

How to Hold the Bow Correctly

01

The bow should be mainly supported with three fingers; the middle, the ring finger, and the thumb (see picture on the right).
Make these three fingers join at the tips to form a ‘fox’ with your right hand. If you are just starting to play the violin and find it difficult to hold the bow with just your three fingers, practice holding a pen or pencil using only these three fingers first and then practice holding your bow (see picture on the left).

02

For now, the position of each of the three fingers should be as is shown in the picture.

Place your thumb in the middle space between the hair and the grip as shown in the picture on the left. Do not lay your thumb flat, but bend your thumb IP joint to about 90 degrees.

The middle and ring fingers should be resting directly above the thumb when holding the bow as shown in the picture (left) below. Use the pads of your fingertips to hold the bow.

TIP!!

Try not to play with straight fingers! You will not be able to hold the bow correctly if you hold your bow with straight fingers! It is easier to hold the bow without straight fingers. Instead, imagine as if you are gently holding an egg in your right hand.

03

At the same time, make sure you are not holding the bow as shown in pictures below.

[Bad Examples]

Thumb and other fingers are over-extended

The bow is held using the index finger and thumb

04

Once the positions of the three fingers are comfortable, place your index finger on the silver part called the winding or wrap and your pinky finger lightly on the stick in a curved position. Try not to add any pressure on your index and your pinky finger because only the thumb and middle finger should be supporting the bow.

05

These pictures show what a good bowing hand grip should look like.

If you follow all the tips above, you should be able to hold the bow correctly.
