How to Hold a Cello Bow

The way you hold the cello bow greatly affects the tone and stability of your playing. By keeping these points in mind, your bowing will become smoother and your tone will become more stable.

How to Hold a Cell Bow

01

Preparing to hold the bow

Avoid touching the bow hair: Bow hair is made from horse tails, and contact with skin oils and sweat can cause deterioration. When holding the bow, be careful not to touch the hair as much as possible.

02

First of all

Point the bow hair downward and hold the middle of the bow with your left hand. Lightly curl your right hand.

03

Positioning of the fingers on the right hand

Position of thumb and little finger
Hold the bow with your right hand lightly curled, placing your thumb on the border between the frog and the stick. Don't press your thumb flat against the bow, but rather place the tip of your thumb on it. Then, move your little finger to the eye.

Position of index finger to ring finger
Wrap your index finger around the stick so that it touches the middle of the first and second joints. Bend your middle and ring fingers and place them on the bow as if covering it.

04

Wrist position

Keep your wrist in a natural position and make sure that the hand holding the bow is relaxed.

05

Checking how to hold the bow

Finally, let's try holding the instrument. With the bow in hand, adjust it so that the bow hair is perpendicular to the strings. If you hold the bow steadily, your bowing movements will be smooth while playing.

Key points

Check using a mirror
Practicing in front of a mirror while checking your bow grip makes it easier to confirm that your posture and hand position are correct.
Check with your instructor
It is more effective to have your instructor or someone with experience check your grip.
Try to relax
Relax your hands when holding the bow and avoid tensing up.

How you hold the cello bow is a fundamental part of playing technique. It may feel difficult at first, but with continued practice it will become natural.
Also, hand size varies from person to person. Take your time and learn it little by little as you find the grip that suits you.
