The drum set is composed of many parts such as the bass drum, snare drum, tom tom, floor tom and various cymbals. So let's introduce the names of the parts of the main drum system this time.
The shells of bass drums are mostly wood.
The top of the bass drum is often equipped with a tom holder base for a tom holder when attaching a tom tom, and you can choose whether or not to attach according to the brand.
In addition, legs called spurs are attached to stabilize the bass drum. Also, put felt or cushion in the shell and use it for muting purposes.
The size is generally 18 inches to 26 inches in diameter, and different depths are available for the same diameter. In general, 22 inches in diameter and 16 inches in depth are used. Power drummers use a caliber larger than 22 inches, and jazz drummers prefer bass drums smaller than 22 inches.
The most frequently used drum set is the snare drum. The tone of the drum set is the most influential, and simply changing the snare may change the image of the tone of the drum set. Metal materials such as steel and brass, which are not often used on other drums, are also popular materials for snares.
The snare side on the back side has wires called snare wires or snappy attached, and the strainer makes it stick to the head (snappy on) or separates it (snappy off) to change the tone. Normally, snappy is on. If you hit in that state, the vibration of the head of the snare side is transmitted to the snappy, and the sound peculiar to the snare is added.
The diameter is mainly 14 inches and the depth varies. 3.5 to 6.5 inches are commonly used. The deep type is a power system, and the shallow type is also called piccolo snare, which is said to be suitable for technical playing styles, but please find your favorite snare according to your preference and playing style.
Often abbreviated as tom, mounting method is done by attaching the tom holder directly to the bass drum, to the cymbal stand or tom stand using clamps, and this puts the burden on the bass drum, or the snare stand.
Toms are available in a wide range of calibers and depth. The larger the diameter, the lower the pitch, and the deeper the trunk, the thicker and deeper the sound becomes. When it is shallow, the attack sound is emphasized and the sound becomes sharp and crisp. However, since the deep-body type comes in a position where the hitting surface is high, depending on the drummer's physique and play style, it is necessary to find the right settings. Find a setting that is easy to hit, and also try adjusting the height of the chair.
The structure is almost the same as the tom, but it has three legs. The three legs can be adjusted individually, so adjust the height and angle according to the playing style.
The size of the shell is "diameter × depth of the cylinder" in inches. In general, products with the same diameter and different depths are available.
Generally, if the material of the shell and the head is the same, the larger the diameter, the lower the pitch of the sound, the deeper the body, the thicker and deeper the sound, and if it is shallow, the attack sound is emphasized and the sound is sharp and crisp.
※ In the United States, it is often expressed by "depth × diameter", and it is expressed by "depth × diameter" on manufacturer sites such as LUDWIG, GRETSCH, DW.
