Upgrade your tone

Upgrade your tone

Feel free to upgrade your guitar amp tone.

It's well known that you can achieve innovative sounds by upgrading your guitar amp speaker(s), but it's very difficult to choose the best one out of a huge number of available speakers. This section does not introduce a sure and easy way to find the right speaker or a possible combination. It is not possible to cover all combinations of different playing styles, guitars, amps and cabinets. Here, based on the know-how and views possessed by Celestion, we propose a little inspirational idea to find your perfect sound. If you can't find the speaker type or combination you're looking for, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, it just means you've never tried it.

Check Point: When replacing with a new speaker, make sure that the speaker's total allowable input (W) is equal to or greater than the amplifier's output.

This is the first step in finding the right speaker. When choosing a new speaker, you will be wondering what to do. But don't worry. Here are some examples to help you enter the world of Celestion. If you do not find what you are looking for, you still have more options.

Vintage Tone

Due to the high volume of players looking for their own sound in the 1960s, amplifier manufacturers produced durable speakers that matched the excessive sound pressure and reliable speakers of the new musical style of that era. Since then, Celestion has made every effort to create the best speakers. Looking back on those days, those speakers had a special sound. That is the origin of the name Vintage Tone.

4 x 12 cabinets

The 4x12 cabinet was originally created in the 1960s. Before the full-scale PA systems appeared, 4x12 cabinets were connected to high-power amplifiers so that the sound of the guitar amplifier could be heard by a large audience. Today, 4x12 cabinets are synonymous with genres like rock and heavy metal.

More Power

For the longest time, the evolution of the amp has been to pursue greater power. However, connecting a modern amplifier to a speaker made in the early 60's could, at worst, cause it to fail. The speakers introduced here are made to reproduce the traditional Celestion sound, with the intention of connecting to a high power amplifier.

Mixing It Up

A more recent approach is to combine speakers of different characteristics in order to create a special cocktail-like blended sound. Celestion takes this approach and proposes some combinations here.

Check Point

  1. Impedance match (ohms):The speakers mounted in the same cabinet use the same impedance.
  2. Power:Experience shows that for 2x12 cabinets, the maximum output value is twice that of the lowest rated speaker input, and for 4x12 cabinets, the amplifier needs to have four times the lowest rated power.
  3. Sensitivity matching:For best performance, make the sensitivity difference less than 3 dB.

Alnico

In the late 50's, Celestion modified the radio speaker (G12) to create the first guitar speaker. The alnico magnet allows a stronger attack, has the clarity of a bell, and gave birth to guitar amplifiers that you could drive hard, with a unique characteristic. The Blue series is part of the Beatles sound and has been loved by many guitar legends.
