How to choose the necessary parts

A feature of the STAGE EVOLUTION truss system is the wide variety of components. Although there is a high degree of freedom in creating various shapes, it may be difficult for first-time buyers to know what to choose or what they need. Here, we will explain thoroughly how to select materials and provide some price quote examples!

Table of contents

Selection of parts

When selecting the parts of a truss system, the first thing to consider is what shape you want to make. Here, we’ll us a box type and an arch type as examples, and we’ll explain the method of selecting parts. For each of the price quote examples, the 29 cm wide square truss (TRUSS/4) series is used as the basis.

How to choose a box type

A box type can be assembled on the stage and used as a turret to install lighting etc. It may seem difficult because of its three-dimensional structure, but you can easily select the parts if you keep these points in mind. Let's take the basic "square truss set box type set" as an example.

Square truss set box type

Dimensions:
Width 400 x Depth 300 x Height 250cm
Set contents:
  • Square truss TRUSS4 / 200 x6
  • Square truss TRUSS4/300 x2
  • Corner square truss TRUSS4 / L30 x4
  • Square truss for the base plate TRUSS4 / BP x4

Selection of the corner part

When assembling the box-type truss system, vertical and horizontal beams, and "three-way" corner parts that can connect columns are required. If it is a 29 cm wide square truss, the following products are applicable.

TRUSS4/L30

Corner part, regardless of the width of the truss (29cm / 22cm), one side has been designed to be 50cm.
Keeping this in mind, let's select the straight parts.

Selection of straight parts

There is a 50 cm corner part on each side, and if you look at the beam part, as the corners are connected to both sides, a total of 100 cm will be occupied by the corners alone (see the figure below).
Therefore, it is necessary to select the straight part by subtracting that amount from the desired finished dimensions (outer dimensions).

Width 400 x depth 300 x Length of parts necessary to make a “square truss set-box"" of height 250cm are as follows.

Width 400cm section:
400cm - 100cm Corner = 300cm
Depth 300cm section:
300cm - 100cm Corner = 200cm
Height 250cm section:
250cm - min 50cm for corner = 200cm

If one part is used for each of the above required lengths, the required parts are as follows.

300cm:TRUSS4/300 x 2

200cm:TRUSS4/200 x 6

Selection of accessories

Although it is a high strength truss system, proper accessory selection is required for safe operation.
In particular, a base plate for stable installation is essential. Please be sure to purchase this as well.

Base plates that come with the "square truss set box-type" below.

TRUSS4/BP

Also there is a lineup of base plates like the following if you want to obtain greater stability.

TRUSS4-BP420:420 x 420mm、2.9kg

TRUSS-BP1x4:300 x 1200mm、22kg

If additional fittings are required

Once you have selected the necessary parts, make sure that you don't need to buy any additional fittings.
The fittings are attached to the truss system parts according to the following rules.

Straight part:
one side (four if square truss, three if triangular truss)
2 way corner part:
One side (four if square truss, three if triangular truss)
Three or more way corner parts:
two way (eight if square truss, six if triangular truss)

Therefore, the "square truss set box type", which has 8 straight members and Four 3-way corners, comes with the connecting fittings shown below.

Straight 8 x 4 pieces + Corner 4 x 8 pieces = 64

The number of required fittings that will be required can be figured out by counting the connection points.
12 connection points in total for the "square truss set box-type". And the square truss requires four fittings per location.

Four connection points x 12 locations = 48

Since there are more connection fittings included than required, it is not necessary to purchase additional fittings if it is a "square truss set box type".

Additional fittings may be required for truss systems with more columns or larger systems with many beams. The concept is the same for any system, so be sure to check it out before purchasing.

How to choose an arched truss

The arched type can be used as the entrance and exit gates to an event. As we stock a wide variety of parts for STAGE EVOLUTION aluminum trusses, we can accommodate a variety of applications by combining parts. Here, we will introduce the "square truss set, arched", as well as some the option examples.

Square truss set, arched

Dimensions:
200cm wide x 250cm high
Set contents:
  • Square truss TRUSS4 / 100 x1
  • Square truss TRUSS4 / 200 x2
  • Corner square truss TRUSS4 / C21 x2
  • Square truss for the base plate TRUSS4 / BP x2

Selection of the corner parts

When assembling an arched truss system, it is necessary to connect the horizontal beams and pillar corner parts using the "two-way-90 degrees" truss. If you are using a 29cm width square truss, below is the part you’ll need.

TRUSS4/C21

There is also a two-way, 90-degree model with rounded corners. You can change the atmosphere simply by changing the corner parts.

TURSS4/C21R

Corner parts, regardless of the width of the truss (29cm / 22cm), are 50cm in length.
Keep this in mind when selecting the straight parts.

Selection of the straight parts

The corner part 50cm in length per side, and the two corners will amount to 1m in length. (See figure below)
Therefore, it is necessary to select the straight parts by subtracting that amount from the desired finished dimensions.

The length of the parts needed to make a "square truss set, box-type" 200cm wide x 250cm high are as follows.

200cm wide section:
200cm - 100cm for corners = 100cm
250cm high section:
250cm - 50cm for corner = 200cm

The number of required straight parts depends on the length of the parts being used. See the following for examples.

100cm:TRUSS4/100 x 1

200cm:TRUSS4/200 x 2

Selection of accessories

This truss system uses high-strength materials, but you must select the appropriate accessories for safe operation.
In particular, the base plate for stable installation is required. Please always purchase the base plate together with the other parts.

See below for the base plate that comes with the "square truss set, arch-type".

TRUSS4/BP

※ If you are erecting the arched truss in a windy place such as outdoors, please use anchors and wires for reinforcement.

TRUSS4-BP420:420 x 420mm、2.9kg

TRUSS-BP1x4:300 x 1200mm、22kg

If additional fittings are required

Let's make sure that there is no need for coming back to purchase more parts once you think you have selected the necessary parts.
The parts of the truss system comes with fittings based on the following rules.

Straight parts:
one way (four if square truss, three if triangular truss)
2 way corner parts:
one way (four if square truss, three if triangular truss)
Three or more way corner parts:
two way (eight if square truss, six if triangular truss)

Therefore, for the "square truss set, arched" you will have three straight parts, and two 2-way corner pieces. You will need the following number of fittings.

Three straight x 4 pieces + two 2-way corners x 4 = 20

The number of required fittings will be decided by counting the connection points.
There are four connection points in the "square truss set, box-type". The square truss requires four fittings per location

Four connection points x four locations = 16

As the "square truss set arch-type" comes with more fittings than required, there’s no need to buy more fittings.

If you have a truss system with more pillars or additional beams, more fittings will be required.
The theory is the same for any system, so please be sure to pre-check exactly what you’ll need to purchase.

How to choose a triangular truss

Triangular trusses are rare, but we have them at the Sound House. When it comes to the corner parts of a triangular truss, there are a great many types, including upwards and downwards, and right and left, respectively, and they assembling them also appears difficult at first glance. I will explain how to choose a triangular truss system.

Triangle truss set box type

Dimensions:
400cm wide x 300cm deep x 250cm high
Set contents:
  • Triangle truss TRUSS3/200 x6
  • Triangle truss TRUSS3/300 x2
  • Triangle truss corner TRUSS3/L31 x2
  • Triangle truss corner TRUSS3/L32 x2
  • Base plate for triangular truss TRUSS3/BP x4

Selection of corner parts

When assembling the box-type truss system, there are vertical and horizontal beams, and "three-way" corner parts that connect to the columns are also required.
This set uses two types of corner parts, "TRUSS3/L31 (hereafter L31)" and "TRUSS3/L32 (hereafter L32)".
What is the difference between these two types? Can't you still assemble the truss system if you make a mistake in your choice? Actually, it’s possible to assemble the system using either the L31 or the L32.

So what's the difference? The direction the pillar faces is different.

First of all, here is an image using both the L31 and L32.
The red triangle indicates the orientation of the pillar.

You can see that the bases of the triangles are aligned on the wide side of the system.
An image using L31 for all four corners

The orientation of the pillars changes depending on the location.
Of course, some people may prefer this, and there is almost no difference in the strength of the structure.

The following is an image using different L31 and L32 in different locations.

The bottom of the triangle can also be aligned with the short side of the box.
Either way, if you want to align the pillars, it is necessary to use both the L31 and the L32.

If you are simply using the truss system as an object, it may not make much difference. However, when you want to hang a banner, tapestry or a sign at an event booth, it is easier to work with a uniform bottom.
The same applies when using the truss system for a stage and hanging a backdrop.

It looks something like this.

When the bottom is aligned

You can also hang the banner and so on like this, but if the bottom is not aligned

It will be a bit off to one side like this, so this is not recommended if you want to center a logo or design in the middle.
If you are considering using the truss system for a stage, we recommend combining the L31 and the L32.

*For how to select straight parts and accessories, refer to How to select box type.
