How to hold the cello

Holding the cello correctly is fundamental to producing a beautiful tone. We have compiled a list of tips for beginners on how to hold the cello. By following these points, you will be able to play in a comfortable posture and will not tire easily even after long hours of practice.

How to hold the cello

01

Sit on a chair

Sit shallowly in the front 1/3 of the chair, with your back straight.
At this time, be aware that the body's center of gravity should be slightly forward.

02

Leg Position

Bend your knees at 90 degrees and spread them evenly on both sides. The soles of the feet should be firmly planted on the floor.

03

Endpin adjustment

Adjust the length of the endpin so that the top of the cello body is at chest level.

04

Positioning the cello

Place the endpin tip of the cello about an isosceles triangle from the toes of your foot.
Pull the instrument close to your body and place the neck against your left shoulder (near the base of the neck). At this point, support the cello lightly with the inside of both knees touching the cello.

05

Body Orientation

The body should face forward and the cello should be held at an angle.
Finally, make sure that the following three points are met.

  1. Maintain a straight back
  2. Keep your knees at 90 degrees
  3. The space between the cello fingerboard and the piece (where the bow should strike) should be an extension of your navel

→ If you feel that the position is slightly off, adjust it with the endpin.

If you can confirm all of the above, you're holding your instrument correctly and naturally.
However, everyone has a different body size. Use this as a reference and find the form that suits you best.
