Wireless microphones lesson

Wireless microphones are literally microphones without cables. The signal from the microphone is transmitted to the receiver by radio waves, and the receiver receives the signal from the transmitter and outputs the audio signal to connected mixers, and so on.
Nowadays there are always things to see in TV music programs and so on. Wireless mics are used for a variety of situations, and a variety of microphones are also used. Here we will introduce the basics of wireless microphones.

Wireless microphone types

Handheld

It can be used for a wide range of applications such as bands, karaoke, speeches and lectures.
A handheld system includes a microphone and a transmitter.

Lavalier type

Ideal for theater, lectures, speeches, etc.
Microphone + Transmitter (Transmitter)
Because you don't have a microphone in hand and the microphone itself is small, you can use both hands freely without the mic getting in the way.

Headset type

Suitable for performances with movement such as dance and live shows. Microphones are fixed into position in the vicinity of the mouth using a headband, and they can handle some extreme movement and you can use both hands freely.

For musical instruments

Cable used for musical instruments such as guitars and basses.
+ transmitter (transmitter)

Standard types

A band: license required
B band: 800 MHz band without license
Digital Wireless: No license 2.4 GHz band

Merits

You can move around freely within the reach of the transmitted radio waves.
As there are no cables on the stage, and you won't have to worry about tripping up on the cable.

Demerits

Sound quality tends to be inferior compared to cable specifications.
If the frequency band collides, it cannot be used as signals get mixed.
The price is relatively high.
The number of simultaneous usable sets is fixed.

Q. Can transmitters and receivers from different manufacturers be used together?: A. Please use transmitters and receivers from the same manufacturer. Different manufacturers are not guaranteed to be compatible.
Q. Can different products from the same manufacturer be used together?: A. You cannot use the same maker if the series is different. Be sure to use the same series.
Q. I am using a lot of mics simultaneously in B band, but I want to increase the number of microphones.: A. Please use Digital Wireless. It is a band different from the B band, and it can be used without crosstalk.
Q. What kind of microphone can I use to connect to the transmitter?: A. The microphones that can be used differ depending on the manufacturer, so please check the options for the model you are considering.
Q. I want to use multiple microphones at the same time: A. In that case, please prepare the necessary number of sets (wireless microphone + receiver). However, please note that the number that can be used simultaneously differs depending on the model.
Q. Can I buy any number of microphones?: A. One wireless receiver is basically necessary for one wireless microphone (transmitter). (※ In the case of dual receivers, up to two wireless microphones can be used.)

Q. SHURE has various series, but are they all compatible with the other series?

A. No.

Please use in combination with the same series. For example, in the case of SVX series, the combinations are as follows.

SVX series

Receiver：SVX4 or SVX88

Transmitter：SVX1, SVX2PG28, SVX2PG58

A number is added after the series model number. The numbers mean the following.

1・・・Belt pack transmitter
2・・・Handheld transmitter
4・・・Single Channel Receiver
88・・・Dual Channel Receiver

※There are some exceptions for higher grade models.

Q. The BLX series can use 6 sets in the same area, but is it possible to connect 6 microphones with one receiver?

A. No.

This is not limited to SHURE, but in general, wireless receivers have 1ch, 2ch, 3ch, and 4ch, and the number of transmitters that can be connected with one receiver is fixed.

In case of BLX series,
BLX4・・・1ch
BLX88・・・2ch

In the case of a wireless set that includes the BLX4 → 6 sets can be used in the same area. In the case of a wireless set that includes the BLX88 → 3 sets can be used in the same area. When using the BLX4 and the BLX88 in combination, there is no problem if the total number of receiver channels is 6 or less. ※However, there is no guarantee that you can use 6 waves.

※Please note that 6 waves may not be available depending on the radio wave conditions of the installation environment.

Q. Which microphone can be connected to the SHURE Belt Pack Transmitter?

A. You can use any SHURE product that has "TQG" at the end of the product model number.

The input terminal of SHURE's belt pack transmitter is the TA4F (mini XLR 4 pin). We also asked whether other manufacturers' products can be used as long as they have the same shape, but the pin assignments may differ, so there may be no sound, or noise may occur even if there is sound. The SHURE belt packs are meant for SHURE microphones. We strongly recommend that you use them together.

Microphones with "TQG" as the last model number can be used with any belt pack regardless of the SHURE series. ※Some products in the list below do not include TQG, but they are supported.

Q. The microphone I purchased separately cannot be connected to the receiver (GLXD or QLXD).

A. You need to update the firm ware.

If you buy more receivers or transmitters later, the firmware may be a different from the firmware version of the original product, in which case the problem will be resolved by updating the firmware.

In addition to the wireless system itself, a computer connected to the Internet is also required to carry out the update. Download the update utility to your computer and connect the wireless system to your computer to update.

Q. Is the SHURE wireless system compliant with the new spurious standards?

A. Items currently on sale can be used after December 1, 2022. The following models can only be used until the end of November 2022.
