There are exceptions in the number of wiring materials, but in the case of a single coil, 2 cores (2), humbucker 4 core shielded wire (4 colored wires and 5 bare wires without coating), 1 Core shield wire (a type in which the wiring material is covered with a silver mesh wire) are common. Shield wire is a wire that is grounded. HOT (+) is used as an output line to connect to input terminals such as pots and PU selectors, and COLD (-) is used as a line to drop to the back of the pot, the housing of PU selectors, etc. Electrical parts installed on the guitar, such as pots, output jacks, and PU selectors, must basically all be connected by an earth wire, except for some exceptions.

2 core type

2 core type

Two wires, HOT (+) and COLD (-). Many manufacturers have adopted white lines as HOT and black lines as COLD.

Humbucker 4 core shield wire type

The basic operation of humbucker is to connect two single coils in series.
The four color-coded lines are HOT (+) and COLD (-) for each single coil.
The wiring is explained below.

Series (serial) wiring

The 4-core shield in the image below is from SEYMOUR DUNCAN. When wiring a very common humbucker, connect red and white (coil 1COLD and coil 2HOT) and wind with tape etc. I do not use this red and white. Black (coil 1 HOT) is hot, green (coil 2 COLD) is cold. Please wire according to the wiring diagram below.

In addition, please note that the color coding of the wiring is different depending on each manufacturer.

The middle wire with the film is HOT (+), and the mesh line covering the line is both COLD (-) and a shield line.

Volume pot

Volume pot

There are three terminals, but it is common to call the 1st terminal, 2nd terminal, and 3rd terminal from the right end with the terminals facing towards you as viewed from the back side (the one without shaft).
Connect HOT (+) from PU or PU selector to terminal 3 and connect terminal 2 to an output destination such as a jack. Please connect No. 1 to the back of the pot (ground). Inside the pot, there is a resistance band such as carbon and a terminal that moves in conjunction with the rotation of the shaft, and this internal terminal is always in contact with the second terminal. When the shaft of the pot is turned to one side, the internal terminal directly contacts the third terminal without passing through the resistance band. This state is full volume. In the same way, when the shaft is turned to the other side, the internal terminal comes in direct contact with terminal 1, and since the terminal 1 is grounded, the signal from PU is also grounded. This is the state of volume 0 (silence).

Tone pot

Tone pot

The structure of the pot itself is the same for both volume and tone.
General high-cut tone control works not only in the pot, but in combination with a capacitor. Condensers make use of the property that it is difficult to let through the bass, and it is a mechanism that drops the treble to the ground.

PU selector

PU selector

The lever switch used in Strat types and the toggle switch used in Les Paul types are common. There are two types of lever switches: 3-point switching and 5-point switching; toggle switches are only 3-point switching.

Wiring example

This time, we will show you typical guitar wiring examples.
Besides this, there are various wiring patterns depending on the number and types of pickups, and the number and role of controls such as Vol, Tone and switches.
