SSL Connex is a USB microphone that provides professional studio quality sound, developed and manufactured by Solid State Logic (SSL), a global manufacturer of mixing consoles and audio tools for music and audio professionals, who develop products for recording studios and broadcasting stations around the world.
SSL CONNEX is equipped with four microphone capsules and has four modes to suit the scene. In each mode, the sound from each microphone capsule is automixed and processed to the optimal sound by the SSL DSP processor using the same algorithms as the SSL EQ and dynamics used by many professional sound creators.
It provides high-quality sound in a variety of situations, such as video distribution, vocal recording, band recording, and online meetings.

*Automix function: A function that automatically adjusts the levels of multiple audio signals, converts them to stereo (or dual mono) and outputs them. SSL CONNEX activates the automix function for each mode.

*SSL CONNEX does not have a normal loopback function (a function that loops the sound of the connected device to the interface INPUT).

■Audio processing modes
SSL Connex is designed to support a variety of applications.

Four optimized audio processing modes can be selected from the device's setup menu.

■Vocal mode (vocal recording, singing and playing, narration recording, etc.)

- Designed to pick up sound sources from the front of the unit, such as the voice of a person singing.

- In this mode, all four microphone capsules are used and mixed down to a stereo signal focused on the front of the unit.

- Records at a louder volume than Solo mode, reducing sound from the sides and back of the CONNEX to ensure your singing voice is captured.

- The microphone's internal audio processing is optimized for relatively quiet sound sources.

■Music mode (band recording, acoustic live, session)

- Designed for a group of musicians positioned around the CONNEX. Designed to pick up loud sound sources such as instruments.

- Reduces the noise floor and unwanted background sound in recordings and live streaming

- In this mode, all four microphone capsules are used and mixed down to a stereo signal centered on the front of the unit.

- The microphone's internal audio processing is optimized for louder music sources.
?■Solo mode (single person video streaming, web conferencing, podcasting, etc.)

-Use when you want to pick up one sound source from the front of the unit, such as for conference calls and podcasting.

-In this mode, only the front microphone capsule is used.

-Optimized for sound from the front and reduces unwanted sound from the back and sides.

-The microphone's internal sound processing is optimized for speech.

■Group mode (multiple online meetings, round tables, live streaming with multiple presenters, etc.)

- Designed to pick up multiple sound sources in a space, such as when broadcasting a round table meeting on a video conferencing system.

- All four microphone capsules are used and mixed into a mono signal.

- The microphone's internal sound processing is optimized for speech, so all presenters can be heard clearly and unwanted background noise is reduced.

Solo mode and group mode are intended for simple meetings/podcasting that require little setup.

Vocal mode and music mode are for advanced users who want to record into a DAW and do their own processing later.

■Immersive multi-channel digital output function
All four modes are equipped with an immersive multi-channel digital output function.
You can access each of the four microphone sources and perform immersive spatial recording and broadcasting.
You can output a total of six channels of four microphone audio and automixed stereo audio separately.

*SSL CONNEX is designed for monitoring with headphones only. It does not have a speaker, but has a 3.5mm headphone output, so please monitor with headphones. It also does not have echo cancellation or noise cancellation functions.

バウンダリーマイクとしては、置く場所の素材の影響が大きい。自宅テーブルの上などは使いものならないぐらい、置く場所のグラウンドの音を拾う。音楽的に使うなら、デスク用のマイクスタンドは必須かなと思います。。
しかしながら、自動でエコライザーとコンプをかけてくれるのは便利。最高のポイントを見つけると、最高に自己満足できる。他のマイクで録音して、それなりに頑張ってエフェクトしても、こいつで録音のテイクとそう変わらない時もあったりね。ってこともあるけど、エフェクトが自動故に、コンプとエコライザーの弊害もあったりなかったりー

バウンダリーマイクにあらず、マイキングがわからない

オンラインのミーティングや講座ではバウンダリーマイクが最適と思っており、音質にはこだわりつつUSBで簡単に接続できる物はないかと探して見つけたのが本機。サウンドハウスで購入した後でAmazon他では半分の価格で買えると知って残念な思いをしたことは置いておこう。

デスク上のPC前に設置してクリアで存在感ののある音で収音できるものだと思ったが違った。ミーティングや講座ではSoloモード使うのがベストで、それは間違っていないようだ。色々調べたり試したたりした結果、思ったのは、「これは構造上も原理的にもバウンダリーマイクではない。近距離で使う物なのか？」ということ。口元に水平に設置した場合はそれなりの音質で収音できた。

しかし、それで解決というわけではない。果たしてそのマイキングが正解なのか疑問が残る。そもそもデスク上に置いて使う機器を求めていたのであり、口元に設置するならばバウンダリータイプのマイクである必要がないのである。

もうひとつ不明点。
試しにVocalモードやMusicモードにしてみたが「なんじゃこりゃ？」と思うような音にしかならない。なんていうか昔の小型ラジオみたいな中高域ばかりが聞こえるような音。オフマイクの音。まさか個別不良かと疑ってもいるのだが、どうなんだろう。

さて、素晴らしい点も書こう。
それはミュート機能。てっぺんを軽くタッチするだけでミュート／解除ができ、ミュートの状態が赤い色で一目でわかる。カフボックスの役割を果たしてくれるのである。ソフトなタッチ式だから音も出ない。この機能がなかったらさっさとハードオフに持って行くかメルカリに出品するところだが、この機能だけのために使い続けるつもりである。

このタッチ式のミュート機能を持ったUSBバウンダリーマイクをSSLでもCPブランドでもなんでもいいから発売されないかな。ミーティングやライブ配信向けの。
